Group exhibition explores climate chaos

333 Gallery in Bangkok’s Warehouse 30 is hosting “Sinking And The Paradox Of Staying Afloat”, a group exhibition featuring the works of six prominent Southeast Asian artists, until Nov 3. Through a variety of media, including video, mixed media, paintings, sculptures and labour-intensive installations, the exhibition addresses the complexities of environmental degradation and the urgent need for climate action.
The exhibition brings together the creative voices of Angkrit Ajchariyasophon, Torlarp Larpjaroensook, LE Brothers with Gemini Kim, Khvay Samnang, Jedsada Tangtrakulwong and Ploenchan Vinyarat, all of whom share a deep connection to the environment and its fragility. Curated by Loredana Pazzini-Paracciani, the exhibition centres on the dualities inherent in humanity’s relationship with nature, asking how do we navigate the contradictory forces of survival and destruction?
The title “Sinking And The Paradox Of Staying Afloat” captures the tension between environmental collapse and human resilience. The term “sinking” not only refers to the alarming effects of climate change — such as rising sea levels and erratic water patterns — but also evokes a more metaphorical sense of drowning in the consequences of our unsustainable practices. Conversely, “staying afloat” speaks to our ability to adapt and persevere, raising the question, how long can we maintain this delicate balance before it becomes too late?
Focusing on water as a vital element, the exhibition explores the impact of climate change on Southeast Asia’s rivers and oceans, particularly Thailand’s Mekong River. The rapid melting of glaciers and unpredictable seasonal shifts have disrupted the region’s water systems, with profound implications for agriculture, biodiversity and urban life. Cities like Bangkok and Ayutthaya are experiencing more frequent flooding, while staple crops like rice face existential threats due to erratic water levels.
The participating artists reflect on these pressing issues through works that blend ecological reflection with community engagement. Whether through recycled materials, laborious craft or immersive installations, they function not just as observers, but as “social workers” and cultural anthropologists, seeking to engage us with the natural world on a deeper level. Their art encourages a renewed sense of individual and collective responsibility, urging us to reconsider our impact on the environment.
